Make your own toothpaste, do your bit for the planet, save money, and avoid mouth-irritating detergents

September 03, 2018

As a family, we’re into taking care of ourselves and we take every opportunity to do the same for the environment. We’re mindful of what we put into our bodies, and the toll our modern lives take on the planet.

For some time we’ve been replacing plastic with glass, steel or bamboo, carrier bags with cotton totes, and swapping out kitchen products like clingfilm and cleansers for waxed papers, and homemade concoctions of bicarb and vinegar. Today, my fellow travellers, I’d like to share with you one of our favourite recipes, that for homemade toothpaste. Our toothpaste is free of the common ingredients found in commercial toothpaste such as fluoride and detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate, and of course the inevitable plastic tubing.

To make the toothpaste you’ll need:
1/4 cup bicarbonate of soda
Water
A couple of drops of peppermint, spearmint, or other essential oil of your choice for flavour
One small sterilised glass jar (sterilise by placing your clean, still wet jar in the microwave on full power for about 45 seconds)

Place the baking soda in the jar and slowly add water until it forms a paste, thin enough to coat your toothbrush, thick enough to stick. Add one to two drops of the essential oil and mix thoroughly. You’ll need to stir the paste each time before you use it.

That’s it! You’ve made your own toothpaste!

This recipe is simple and effective. Give it a try, and your teeth will feel clean and your mouth, fresh. A note of warning: it may take a few days to adjust to the slightly salty taste of your homemade toothpaste, unlike commercial brands, yours isn’t highly sweetened!

Look out for more recipes on the Soseas blog in the coming months.

How to Care for your Wax Wraps
How to Care for your Wax Wraps

When we decided to make wax wraps, we tested quite a few samples looking for the perfect combination of size, cotton type, coating and durability. It was during this testing phase that we decided to add jojoba oil to the wax to improve stickiness and reduce the amount of time we had to spend "pre-warming" the wraps before use; one of those times when having a chemist in the Soseas family can come in useful!  Eventually, we settled on the product we have today—a pack of three in a variety of sizes with all three wraps larger than most those currently available, made with organic cotton, and a proprietary coating of wax, jojoba oil and resin.
